New Jersey diocese suppresses Traditional Latin Mass

Another US Diocesan Roman Mass Supressed

Bishop Joseph Williams of Camden, New Jersey, has suppressed the Mass in the Roman rite at St. Gianna Beretta Molla Parish in Northfield.
The final Roman Mass was celebrated on June 28.
The excuse used to end the Mass was the retirement of Father Anthony J. Manuppella.
The priest who has taken over as an administrator knows how to say the Roman rite, but lacks permission to celebrate. Instead, he offers a Sunday noon Novus Ordo in Latin, celebrated ad orientem.
According to parishioners and blog posts, Bishop Williams did not renew the permission required for the Mass to continue.
Below is an English user comment from a parishioner published on Wdtprs.com: "The Bishop has rejected all pleas for mercy and charity from our retiring pastor, our dedicated altar servers, and congregation to allow our Traditional Latin Mass to continue".

Leo XIV Appoints German 🌈 Bishop Who Supports "Blessings" for Homosex Couples

Today, Leo XIV appointed Monsignor Christian Würtz, 55, as Bishop of Eichstätt, Germany.
Leo XIV again chose a canon lawyer. A native of Karlsruhe, he originally studied law at Heidelberg University before entering the seminary. He holds two doctorates - one in both civil and canon law (doctor iuris utriusque) and another in theology.
He also served as rector of Freiburg's seminary.
At 48, he was the youngest bishop in Germany when he was ordained auxiliary bishop of Freiburg in 2019. At 55, he now becomes the youngest diocesan bishop in Germany.
Part of the "Rainbow" Faction Among Bishops
In September 2022, Monsignor Würtz voted "yes" at the German Synodal Way for the controversial document on the Doctrinal Reassessment of Homosexuality. The document argued that homosexual orientation is "not self-chosen and ... cannot be changed," and that homosexual Catholics should be accepted without reservation.
He also voted yes for the document "Dealing with Gender Diversity." It asked bishops …More

July’s other illicit episcopal consecration

This month is likely to see in the Church not one but two sets of episcopal consecrations without a papal mandate, though taking place under very different circumstances. Fr. Michael Mary, F.SS.R., pictured in 2020. Credit: Screenshot from @TransalpineRedemptorists YouTube channel. The first, publicized worldwide, took place July 1 at Écône, Switzerland, when the traditionalist Society of St. Pius X illicitly consecrated four new bishops, despite an explicit prohibition by the Holy See. The second, less likely to resonate in the global media, is scheduled for July 25 on the remote, wind-blown Scottish island of Papa Stronsay. Fr. Michael Mary, 72, is the superior general and founder of the Congregation of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer (Transalpine Redemptorists), which has been based on Papa Stronsay since 1999. The community — not to be confused with the Redemptorist order — grew out of the SSPX but was reconciled to Rome for 18 years, before it gravitated toward an even more …

Abp. Gänswein: Benedict XVI felt ‘sorrow in his heart’ over Francis’ Latin Mass crackdown

Archbishop Gänswein: "Now Is the Time to Abolish Traditionis Custodes"

Archbishop Georg Gänswein hopes the restrictions on the Mass in the Roman rite will be lifted, he told Il Giornale on July 7.
Looking back to Benedict XVI's 2007 Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum, Monsignor Gänswein said the Pope wanted to restore “full rights to a rite that had never been abolished”: “His goal was to give it its rightful place again within the Church and to restore peace in the Church's liturgical life.”
According to Archbishop Gänswein, Summorum Pontificum was not conceived as a step toward reconciliation with the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X. Rather, “it was directed toward the Church itself.”
Benedict XVI was pleased with the results of this reform. “It was beginning to bear fruit. It worked especially well among young people, and this is evident above all in the steadily growing numbers participating each year in the Paris-to-Chartres pilgrimage.”
Monsignor Gänswein added that these young people are not opposed to the Second Vatican Council: “Anyone who …More

Cardinal Müller contradicts Cardinal Fernández on validity of SSPX confessions | Advaticanum

Cardinal Gerhard Müller appears to have contradicted an explanatory note issued by Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández on the canonical status of the sacraments administered by the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X. In an interview with K-TV on 6 July, Cardinal Müller was asked whether confessions heard by priests of the Society of Saint Pius X were valid or invalid. His response differed from the position set out in Cardinal Fernández’s explanatory note, published on 2 July. “The confessions are valid, but illicit,” Cardinal Müller said. “The power to forgive or retain sins is conferred through the sacrament of Holy Orders. Its exercise can only be restricted by the bishop or the Pope, as provided by canon law.” His remarks stand in contrast to the explanatory note issued by Cardinal Fernández, which stated in its third point: “Finally, the holy People of God are hereby warned that the sacred ministers of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X administer the sacraments unlawfully and that …

Celebrating compassion, preserving culture

HADLEY — Arranged in a semicircle at the Most Holy Redeemer Church parking lot on Monday, Tibetans took a deep breath of juniper-scented air, raised the flour pinched between their fingers and let out their breath in a long, harmonious “om.” As soon as the third sacred chant ended, they tossed the barley flour, known as tsampa, into the air to create small clouds of joy. The ritual marked the beginning of western Massachusetts’ observance of the 14th Dalai Lama’s 91st birthday. Cardinal Rouco Varela: No Excessive Regulations for Roman Rite Catholics

“We must put an end to liturgical abuses that contradict the teachings of the Second Vatican Council,” Cardinal Antonio María Rouco Varela, 89, Archbishop Emeritus of Madrid, told LaNuovaBq.it on July 7.
Furthermore, he called for “understanding for those who wish to attend the older rite” and for “respect for the freedom of the faithful within the communion of the Church” - that is, “not by imposing excessive regulations.”

The Framework includes discussion on Accompaniment of cohabiting couples and accompaniment of Couples in irregular situations of Divorce

Leo XIV's October Synod about Accompaniment of the Divorced

Today, the General Secretariat of the Synod issued the preparatory framework for the October 7–14 meeting on the implementation of Amoris Laetitia between Pope Leo XIV and the presidents of the bishops' conferences. The gathering marks the tenth anniversary of Amoris Laetitia.
The format is described as "synodal," involving a process of listening, prayer, and discernment. The aim is "to discern the direction in which the Holy Spirit is leading us today."
The five discussion themes are:
• Families today: reality, beauty and challenges
• Young people and the discovery of the vocation to marriage (including cohabiting couples)
• Married life: the first years of marriage—a decisive time
• In the difficulties of life: accompanying and supporting
• Christian families as subjects of the Church's mission

What John Paul II Left Implicit Is Now Explicit: SSPX Is in Schism

COMMENTARY: Pope Leo XIV has chosen, with discretion, to end the failed outreach of Pope Benedict XVI to the SSPX. On July 2, 1988, Pope St. John Paul II wrote that the illicit ordination of bishops by the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) constituted a schismatic act, not only for the six bishops involved then, but for all those who “formally adhere” to it. Thirty-eight years later to the day, the SSPX again having ordained bishops without a pontifical mandate, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) clarified what John Paul meant, by means of a decree and an explanatory note. What John Paul left implied is now explicit — all the priests of the SSPX are “in schism and subject to the penalty of excommunication.” That applies too to the lay faithful who “formally adhere” to the schism, for example, by supporting the illicit ordination of bishops, or by exclusively frequenting the SSPX chapels. The July 2 decree from the DDF — issued the day after the SSPX episcopal ordinations in …

Florence Archdiocese Funds LGBTQ+ House

Worse than Germany: The Caritas of the Archdiocese of Florence has launched Project Andrea, under which the Archdiocese will work hand in hand with the group Arcigay. The latter is Italy's leading homosexual advocacy organization.

The house will offer "personalized support and protected accommodation for young men and women in [gender] transition between the ages of 18 and 35."
The entire project is funded by the Church through the Italian tax allocation 8×1000 (eight per thousand).

This is only the latest sign of the Florentine archdiocese's closeness to homosexuals, especially since Archbishop Gherardo Gambelli took office in June 2024.

"The formula used by Tucho to excommunicate priests and laypeople lacks penal effectiveness"

"An Explanatory Note Cannot Excommunicate"

On 2 July, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, led by Cardinal Víctor Fernández, issued a decree and an accompanying explanatory note on the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX). InfoVaticana.com notes the two documents carry very different legal weight.
The decree declares that the six bishops directly involved in the 1 July illicit episcopal consecrations have incurred latae sententiae excommunication.
Canon law permits only a declaratory decree or judicial sentence to declare such penalties, limiting the decree's legal effect to those six bishops.
The explanatory note goes further, stating that FSSPX priests are in schism, and that lay faithful who formally adhere to the schism incur excommunication.
However, the note has no penal force because it is neither a law, a penal precept, nor a declaratory decree or judicial sentence, but simply a doctrinal explanation.
Furthermore, latae sententiae excommunication requires an individual assessment of culpability and cannot …More
